Kirill –
In Stockholm during the ski season it is very expensive to have your skis serviced
and on top of that, you have to wait for few days, and you can’t be sure about what
the ambient temperature would be when you receive your skis, so you can’t tell
service guys which wax to apply certainly. This is super annoying on all levels to be
honest.
Same situation is when you plan your travel to decent places north, like Falun, Mora,
Sälen, you name it. You just can’t make it right and it’s a real disappointment when
you’ve been waiting for your ski trip for weeks and your skis just don’t ski when you’re
there.
Same thing is when the temperature is unstable and you have to wax in the same
morning you ski.
Not talking about Vasaloppet when queue can ruin your race, independent if you
booked your waxing or not.
I’m generally a DIY person, so as most of us skiers, I’ve turned into waxing on my
own, however I’ve been struggling to organise it in order to not mess my house and
my family life with it. So, I’ve been searching for something that will serve as brilliant
as it served me statistically on Bessans base in France, but something that I can
carry on with ease and use everywhere on the go, as well as use easily in my tiny
Stockholm apartment.
Of course, you can buy setups from the well-known ski brands, however their setups
are way more expensive, and what’s more important, they don’t provide you with a
compact and solid base to clamp your skis. They just don’t. Unless you have a very
long table in your household that you wish to sacrifice for the sake of waxing. Insane.
With travel waxer setup I just covered the floor with a simple 3M rollout tape cover
that you use when you’re painting your walls (I was on the trip, so I carefully
protected the rented apartment floor from wax). At home I use the everlasting
400micron thick cover that catches all wax hot and cold debris.
I’ve deployed the entire setup including plugging in my iron in 2-3 minutes. Not joking,
it is that easy. Put it back in 2 minutes as well. Wow.
Overall, I’ve traveled with a car. Weights nothing and takes no space at all. If I
traveled just with skis and ski iron with my waxes and brushes etc – I think I would not
mind at all putting this insignificant weight with me.
Overall if I compare travel waxer setup to finding where to put my clamps and how to
deal with it afterwards, I would 100% choose travel waxer.
The only thing I wish I could do with travel waxer setup is I could do both skis at the
same time. But it can be fixed with 2 setups.
